What to Expect During an In-Home Newborn Session
Welcoming a newborn into your home is one of life’s most beautiful moments—and capturing those early days with an in-home newborn photography session makes the experience even more personal and meaningful. As your photographer, I’m honored to be invited into your space to document these authentic, heartfelt memories in a relaxed and natural environment.
To ensure your session runs smoothly and feels as stress-free as possible, here are a few helpful tips to prepare for your in-home newborn photo session:
Schedule Around Your Newborns Routine
When planning your session, we’ll choose a time that aligns with your baby’s typical nap and feeding schedule. While many families love including tender moments like feeding or soothing during the shoot (which I absolutely encourage!), it's helpful to choose a time when your little one is most content. This also gives us the best chance for capturing a variety of peaceful, snuggly, and awake images.
Decide On Spaces Ahead of Time
Before your session, we’ll chat about which areas of your home you’d like to highlight. Common favorites include the nursery, primary bedroom, and living room. These locations not only tell your family’s story but also tend to offer cozy settings and beautiful natural light.
Choosing your photo locations ahead of time allows you to tidy or style the space in a way that feels true to you. I’ll also help guide you in choosing areas with the best lighting so we can make the most of your home’s natural glow.
Choose Comfortable and Coordinated Outfit Options
One of the best parts about an in-home newborn photography session is the flexibility and comfort it offers. Whether your family stays in one outfit the entire time or decides to do a quick change, the choice is entirely yours! I always recommend wearing whatever feels most natural and comfortable—after all, you're in your own home, and the goal is to capture your genuine connection as a family.
That said, it’s a smart idea to have a few backup options ready, especially for your newborn. Spit-up and little accidents happen, and having a change of clothes nearby helps us keep the session flowing smoothly.
Add Meaningful Personal Touches
The beauty of photographing your newborn in your home is the chance to showcase the little details that make your space yours. Think about incorporating meaningful items or everyday routines into your session—these are the things that tell your story.
Some great ideas include:
Reading your favorite book together in the nursery
Cuddling up with a hand-knit blanket from a loved one
Including family heirlooms, personalized décor, or special toys
These personal touches not only add emotional depth to your images but also make your photo gallery truly one-of-a-kind. Your home is filled with stories—let’s bring those stories into your photos.
